7 Helpful Tips to Prepare for Your Senior Session
From your local Monte Vista High School senior photographer

Senior year is such an exciting time—full of big milestones, proud moments, and lots of emotion for both seniors and their families. As a Monte Vista High School senior photographer, I’ve had the honor of capturing this special season for so many incredible teens and their parents, and I want to help make your photo experience feel fun, meaningful, and stress-free.
Whether you’re a parent getting ready to celebrate your teen’s final year of high school, or a senior dreaming up a session that feels totally “you,” these tips will help you feel confident and prepared for our time together.

1. Pick 2–3 Outfits for Variety
Choosing more than one outfit adds fun variety to your gallery and gives you a chance to show off different sides of your personality. I recommend bringing a mix—maybe one elevated casual look, a dressier option, and something that represents your next chapter (college gear, sports uniform, or even your favorite band tee). And yes, I’m here to help! I provide styling guidance, access to my online tool, and a curated client closet.

2. Bring a Prop That Tells Your Story
If there’s something that’s been a meaningful part of your high school journey—like a violin, hockey stick, cheer pom-poms, or a letterman jacket—bring it! Including personal props can make your session feel more authentic and help tell the full story of who you are in this moment.

3. Lean Into the Awkward at First
Let’s be real: almost everyone feels a little nervous when we start. That’s totally normal! I always tell my seniors (and their parents!) that the first 10–15 minutes are just a warm-up. We’ll ease in, get comfortable, and before you know it, we’ll be laughing and creating photos that feel relaxed, joyful, and truly you.

4. Don’t Forget Moral Support
Bringing a friend, sibling, or parent along can be a huge help—both emotionally and practically. Having someone familiar nearby makes it easier to relax, and they can help with outfit changes, props, or cheering you on from behind the scenes. Some of the biggest smiles I’ve captured have been sparked by a mom's proud expression or a friend's silly dance moves just off camera.

5. Think About Timing and Seasons
Senior photos can be done any time of year, but early spring is especially popular for its lush green hillsides and blooming flowers here in the Bay Area. That said, every season offers something special, and I’ll guide you through location options based on the time of year you book.

6. Trust the Process and Have Fun
This is such a special chapter of life, and I want your session to reflect that. We'll create space for genuine laughter, sweet moments, and natural connection—not stiff poses or forced smiles. My goal is always to capture the heart of who you are in a way that feels real and timeless.

7. Preserve the Moment with Prints + Photo Books
Once you’ve fallen in love with your images (and you will!), you’ll have the option to order high-quality prints and keepsake photo books through me. These make beautiful gifts for family, graduation parties, or just for looking back and remembering this milestone for years to come.
