What to Know Before Your Maternity Session | Pleasant Hill Maternity Photographer

Pregnancy is such a fleeting season of life. Even on the long days when you’re uncomfortable, tired, or counting down the weeks, there’s something incredibly special about documenting this chapter before everything changes. As a Pleasant Hill maternity photographer, one of my favorite things is helping moms feel relaxed, comfortable, and genuinely excited about their session.
One of the biggest things I want expecting moms to know is that your maternity session does not need to feel overly posed, stressful, or complicated. The best sessions are usually the ones where you simply slow down, connect with your family, and allow yourself to be present in the moment.
If you’re planning maternity photos and wondering what to expect, here are a few tips that can help you prepare for a beautiful, relaxed experience.

When Should You Schedule Your Maternity Session?
One of the most common questions I get as a Pleasant Hill maternity photographer is when maternity photos should happen. In most cases, I recommend scheduling your session somewhere between 28–35 weeks.
That said, every pregnancy is different. Some moms have a beautifully visible bump earlier on, while others carry smaller until later. Comfort also plays a huge role. The sweet spot is usually when your belly is clearly showing, but you still feel comfortable enough to walk, move naturally, and enjoy your session without feeling overly exhausted.
If you’re expecting multiples or experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, scheduling a little earlier is often a good idea as well.

Your Session Can Be Whatever You Want It to Be
There’s no single “right” way to approach maternity photos.
Some moms want the session to focus entirely on them and this new season they’re stepping into. Others love including their partner or children and turning the experience into something more connection-focused and storytelling-driven.
Both approaches are beautiful.
I absolutely love when your partner and children are included because it allows space for genuine interaction, movement, and emotion. Some of the sweetest moments happen naturally when kids are simply loving on mom without being overly directed.
And if you’re coming alone, that can feel incredibly powerful and intimate too.

You Do Not Need to Know How to Pose: Let Your Pleasant Hill Maternity Photographer Gently Guide You
This is probably the number one concern I hear before sessions.
Almost every mom tells me some version of: “We’re awkward in photos.”“I have no idea what to do with my hands.”“My husband hates taking pictures.”
I promise you do not need to arrive knowing how to pose.
During your session, I gently guide you the entire time in a way that feels natural and relaxed. I focus more on movement, connection, and interaction than stiff posing. The goal is never to force perfect smiles or overly formal photos. Instead, I want your images to feel authentic to you and your family.
Some of the most meaningful images happen in the in-between moments — laughter, soft touches, kids snuggling in close, or simply taking a quiet moment together.

What to Wear for Maternity Photos
Flowy dresses always photograph beautifully outdoors because they add movement and softness, but cozy sweaters, jeans, oversized button-downs, or simple neutral basics can feel incredibly timeless too.
Choosing clothing that you look and feel your best in is the goal!
As part of my maternity photography experience, I also offer styling guidance, access to my client closet, and an online styling tool to help make outfit planning feel much less overwhelming.

Choose a Location That Feels Natural
One reason I love photographing maternity sessions around the East Bay is because we have such beautiful variety: open hillsides, eucalyptus trees, tall grasses, trails, flowers, and soft golden light that photographs beautifully year-round. Each season offers a different look to really capture the moment.
I always help guide clients toward locations that fit the overall feel you're envisioning for your session.

Why We Shoot at Golden Hour
Lighting makes such a huge difference in photography.
Golden hour — the hour before sunset — creates the softest, most flattering light and helps give images that warm, dreamy feeling so many families love.

Don’t Stress About Perfection
Your maternity session does not need to feel perfect to be meaningful.
Toddlers may run around. Hair may blow in the wind. Someone may need snack breaks. Your partner may feel unsure at first. That’s all normal.
The most beautiful images are rarely the perfectly posed ones. They’re the moments that feel honest and connected. These capture the anticipation, excitement, softness, and love that already exists before your baby even arrives.
As a Pleasant Hill maternity photographer, my goal is always to create a relaxed experience where you can simply enjoy this session and walk away with photographs that feel true to your family.
If you’re thinking about scheduling maternity photos in the East Bay, I’d love to help you plan a session that feels natural, comfortable, and beautifully you.
