The Best Spots for Fall Photos in the East Bay: Your Local Family Photographer's Guide

Fall in the East Bay is one of my favorite times of year. The warm golden hills, towering redwoods, dramatic shorelines, colorful trees, and autumn sunsets create the perfect settings for relaxed, heartfelt family photos. Every location offers something a little different, making it easy to find a place that feels just right for your family. The best part is that you don't have to travel far to find the perfect spot to create an incredible fall photo gallery in the east bay.

One of the questions I hear most often after a family books a session is:

"Where should we take our photos?"

My answer is always the same: It depends on your family.

Some families dream of colorful fall leaves. Others picture wide-open California hills with Mount Diablo in the distance. Some want towering trees, while others love the idea of watching the sun set over the water.

After photographing families throughout the East Bay for years, I've learned that there isn't one "best" location. There's simply the one that's the best fit for your family, your kids, and the kind of memories you want to create.

Location choice is one of my favorite parts of the planning process. I spend many hours every season visiting my favorite locations and getting familiar with the light, the scenery, the accessibility, and the overall vibe.

Hi, I'm Denise, the family photographer behind Denise Wilson Photography! I've spent years photographing families all over the East Bay, and one of my favorite parts of the planning process is helping clients choose the perfect location. I revisit these spots throughout the year, paying attention to how the light changes, when the scenery is at its best, and which locations work best for different families. This guide is a collection of the places I find myself recommending again and again each fall.

What Makes a Great Photo Location?

When people start planning their family photos, they often focus on one thing: the backdrop. And while a beautiful location certainly matters, it's only one piece of what makes a session truly special.

When I'm helping families choose a location, I'm thinking about so much more than whether the scenery is pretty. I'm considering how the light will fall throughout the session, whether there's enough room for little ones to run and explore, how accessible the location is for your family, and whether the setting naturally encourages connection and play.

Every location has its own personality.Some feel adventurous, with sweeping views and winding trails. Others are quiet and intimate beneath towering redwoods. Some are perfect for chasing toddlers through open fields, while others invite families to slow down and cuddle together as the sun sets over the water.

The best location isn't necessarily the most popular one—it's the one that fits your family.

My goal is for you to arrive at your session, take a deep breath, and simply enjoy being together. I don't want you worrying about where to stand or what comes next. I choose locations that photograph beautifully, give your family space to move naturally, and allow us to create genuine moments instead of stiff poses.

Years from now, you probably won't remember exactly what the backdrop looked like. You'll remember your child laughing as they ran ahead on the trail, the way everyone snuggled close as the sun disappeared behind the hills, and how it felt to spend an evening simply enjoying one another.

With that in mind, here are the East Bay locations I find myself recommending again and again every fall.

A quick note: Nature doesn't always follow the calendar. Peak fall color varies slightly each year depending on the weather, so while I keep this guide updated annually, Mother Nature always has the final say! :)

Markham Nature Park in Concord

If someone tells me they're dreaming of classic fall colors, I don't even have to think about my answer.

Markham Nature Park is my favorite place in the East Bay for autumn foliage.

For a few short weeks each year, the trees transform into vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold, creating the kind of scenery people associate with classic fall. It's one of the few places in our area where you can truly experience that look, which is why it is one of my most requested locations every autumn.

Beyond the colorful leaves, I love the ease this park offers. Winding pathways and open lawns provide easy walking for all ages.

One thing to know is that the peak fall color doesn't last long. Every year is a little different depending on the weather, but those gorgeous leaves typically make their appearance for just a few weeks before they're gone again.

If colorful fall foliage is at the top of your wish list, this is one location I always recommend booking early.

Martinez Regional Shoreline

If your idea of the perfect fall session is less about colorful leaves and more about peaceful sunsets and wide-open views, Martinez Regional Shoreline is one of my favorite places to photograph. We can wander along the waterfront, cross charming wooden bridges, explore the golden marsh grasses, and finish the evening watching the sun dip below the horizon.

It's a completely different look from the traditional park setting, with interesting colors and textures. Every gallery here feels unique and has that warm, timeless California feel.

Another reason this location is so popular is how easy it is to explore. The walking is all flat, making it a wonderful option for families with toddlers, grandparents, or anyone who prefers a more accessible location. We take our time, let the kids explore, and stop wherever the light is beautiful along the way.

If you're drawn to glowing sunsets, natural tones, and a gorgeous waterfront setting, it's hard to beat.

The open sky, reflections on the water, and golden evening light create such a beautiful, serene backdrop for sessions of all types.

Scenic Overlook in Concord

If someone tells me they want photos that feel like classic Northern California, this is one of the first locations that comes to mind.

Tucked away in the hills above Concord is one of my favorite overlooks, offering sweeping views of rolling golden hills, towering eucalyptus trees, and the kind of warm evening light that photographers dream about. It's a simple, natural setting that lets your family take center stage while still showing off everything that makes the East Bay so beautiful.

Because the overlook sits a little higher, the light here is especially pretty just before sunset. As the sun drops lower in the sky, the hills seem to glow, creating that soft, golden look so many families love.

Reaching the overlook does require a short uphill walk, but it's well worth it. If your family enjoys a little adventure and doesn't mind stretching your legs for a few minutes, you'll be rewarded with one of the most beautiful views in the area.

I especially love this location for families, maternity sessions, high school seniors, and couples who want that classic California landscape without driving far from home.

Mount Diablo Foothills in Clayton

When people picture the East Bay, chances are they think of Mount Diablo.

The foothills surrounding the mountain are one of my favorite areas to photograph because they capture everything I love about our landscape: rolling golden hills, majestic oak trees, and breathtaking views that feel both timeless and uniquely Californian.

I photograph at two nearby locations in the foothills, each offering a slightly different experience. They're only a couple of minutes apart, but depending on your family's needs and the look you're hoping for, one may be a better fit than the other.

The first location features sweeping views of Mount Diablo itself, the Clayton quarry in the distance, and rolling tree-spotted hills. It's my recommendation for families who want wide-open scenery and that iconic East Bay backdrop. The walk to the viewpoint takes about five minutes uphill, so it's a great choice for families who are comfortable with a little incline in exchange for incredible views.

Just down the road is another great spot overlooking the Clayton quarry on one side and Mt. Diablo on the other. This spot has a slightly different feel, with layered hills creating an open backdrop that's especially beautiful on cloudy evenings. The walk is shorter and easier than the Mount Diablo viewpoint, making it a wonderful option for families who prefer less walking while still enjoying gorgeous scenery.

No matter which spot we choose, the Mount Diablo foothills offer a beautiful golden setting that feels quintessentially East Bay.

Old Borges Ranch in Walnut Creek

If you're drawn to rustic charm and a little bit of history, Old Borges Ranch is such a fun place for a fall session.

One of my favorite things about this location is the variety. We usually begin around the historic ranch buildings, weathered wood fences, and old stone features before making our way to the hilltop for beautiful sunset views. It almost feels like two locations in one, giving your gallery lots of variety in one location.

The ranch has a relaxed, countryside feel that's perfect for families looking for something a little different than a traditional park or field. The combination of rustic textures, open hilltop, and golden evening light creates images that feel warm, timeless, and full of character.

There is a bit of a steep walk to access the hills for the sunset views, so its best for people who are prepared for a short uphill hike. You' be rewarded with absolutely stunning & sweeping views.

If you're envisioning flowy layers, boots, or a classic autumn color palette, Old Borges Ranch is such a beautiful fit.

Lar Rieu Park in Walnut Creek

The historic windmill at Lar Rieu Park gives this location its charm, but it's the surrounding landscape that keeps me coming back. Rustic fencing, mature oak trees, golden grasses, stone structures and wide open skies create a setting that feels peaceful, timeless, and full of character.

One of my favorite things about photographing here is how versatile it is. We can capture cozy moments beneath the trees, playful interactions along the paths, and finish with beautiful golden light as the sun begins to set.

This location has a quiet, country feel that's perfect for families who want something unique without straying too far from home.

Roberts Regional Recreation Area in Oakland

Not everyone wants golden hills for their family photos every year.

If towering trees, soft forest light, and a peaceful atmosphere are more your style, Roberts Regional Recreation Area is the one for you.

Walking beneath these incredible redwoods feels like stepping into another world. The light filters gently through the trees, creating a calm, intimate setting that's beautiful year-round and especially cozy during the fall months.

One thing I love about this location is that sessions happen a little earlier in the day rather than right at sunset. That's a nice advantage for families with babies or young children with strict bedtimes.

The forest also offers a completely different color palette than my other locations. Instead of golden grasses and warm sunsets, you'll find rich greens, earthy browns, and soft natural light that keeps the focus right where it belongs—on your family.

Just steps from the parking lot, this spot is great for people with mobility restrictions or older family members. No hills required! And there is a bathroom. :)

If you're looking for a quieter, more intimate setting, this is always one of my favorite recommendations.

Hidden Hilltop Tree Swing in Concord

Perched high above the East Bay is a handcrafted hilltop tree swing with panoramic views that seem to stretch forever. It's one of the most unique places I photograph, and every session here feels like a little adventure.

Reaching the swing requires about a 20-minute uphill hike, so it isn't the right fit for every family. But for those who don't mind the climb and some curious cows, the reward is well worth it. The views are breathtaking, the sunsets are unforgettable, and the swing adds a playful touch that's unlike any other location I offer.

I especially love this spot for adventurous families with kids, high school seniors, maternity sessions, and couples who want something truly one of a kind.

Worth the Drive

Most of the locations in this guide are within the East Bay, but sometimes a family tells me they're up for a little road trip in exchange for an unforgettable backdrop.

If that sounds like you, here are two destinations that are absolutely worth the drive.

Rodeo Beach at the Marin Headlands

If you've always imagined your family photos by the ocean, Rodeo Beach is one of my favorite coastal locations in the Bay Area.

Rodeo Beach is framed by dramatic cliffs, rugged coastline, and open sky, creating a backdrop that's both breathtaking and uniquely Northern California. Whether your kids are collecting rocks along the shoreline, splashing at the water's edge, or simply cuddling together as the sun sets, this location always feels exciting and adventurous.

It's especially beautiful in the fall, when the beaches tend to be less crowded and the weather is often some of the nicest of the year.

A walk down and incline (and then back up!) is required to access the beach. Weather can be unpredictable ranging from strong wind to cold temps and thick fog. That's the Northern California coast for ya! But this is one of those locations that never disappoints, even when the weather isn't exactly what we hoped for.

Golden Gate Bridge Viewpoints in San Francisco

For families wanting an iconic Northern California backdrop, the Golden Gate Bridge is it!

Over the years, I've found a couple locations that showcase the bridge stunningly.

Choosing the best spot for Fall Photos in the East Bay (for your family)

Choosing the right location is about so much more than finding a beautiful backdrop. It's about finding a place where your family can slow down, explore together, laugh, snuggle, and simply enjoy being with one another, bathed in beautiful light.

Years from now, your children probably won't remember the name of the park or whether the leaves were the perfect shade of orange that evening. They'll remember twirling in your arms, chasing bubbles through the hills, climbing onto your shoulders, and the way it felt to spend an evening together.
